The Cradle of Humankind a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Sterkfontein Caves area is about 50 kilomtres from Johannesburg.
In these limestone caves is where the 2.3 million year old fossil Australopithecus africanus (nicknamed 'Mrs Ples') was found in 1947.
The name Cradle of Humankind reflects the fact that the site has produced a large number, as well as some of the oldest, hominin fossils ever found, some dating back as far as 3.5 million years ago. This area alone has produced more than a third of early hominid fossils ever found, depicting the birthplace of humanity.
Our Tour begins at the Maropeng ('returning to the place of origin') Visitors Centre built like a burial mound called a Tumulus. We enjoy interactive displays about the evolution of the world and humankind. We view fossils, learn how humankind evolved, view stone tools up to 1-million years old and take an underground boat ride through the different stages of the Earth's creation.
We then take a tours of the Sterkfontein Caves, where a permanent hominid exhibition is also displayed. Paleontologists and archaeologists consider this to be one of the top archaeological sites in the world.
